Day 3 - Southern Most Tip of South America (February 27, 2023)

 EZE to Ushuaia

Jerry and I slept really well after having traveled so far, busy day and a 2-hour time change.  Unfortunately, when we awoke, we discovered that the flight with our luggage was delayed arrival and may not make our flight to Ushuaia.  Starbucks drinks were calling our names, so the girls and I went for a walk prior to leaving for the airport.

The hotel called for a taxi which was slow coming.  What felt like forever was only 10 minutes, but it was still adding to the stress of the day.  The drive from the airport to the hotel was 45 minutes on Sunday.  Though our return trip to the airport went much faster.  There was an Atlas agent at check-in.  We explained the luggage situation and told her that AA had requested that we go to their main office at a different terminal that morning to arrange for our luggage transfer.

We checked in for the flight.  The girls went through security while we went to the AA terminal.  The office was hidden behind a screen.  We felt like we were going to the British Airways luggage processing area, but we did find the hidden office where the door was locked.  We knocked and someone did answer!

The AA Agent was aware of the situation but was not hopeful that our luggage would arrive in time.  She said, “No worries, we will have it sent to your next port.”  We explained that there was no “next port” and that there was medication in the luggage which would be needed.  The process continued – we stood outside this hidden door, she would come out and speak with us, shut the door, we stressed, she would speak with us, shut the door, we stressed.  We considered getting a later flight to Ushuaia to wait for the luggage – there were no flights which would arrive in time.  Door opens, talk, door shut, stress.  We had all sorts of solutions – take the luggage directly from the AA flight to our flight.  No, the luggage had to come off the plane, come through the carousel before being placed on our flight.  Delay our flight – no, it was a charter, no opportunity to delay.  Time was getting short so we left contact information along with a description of the luggage with AA Agent and hoped for the best.  Before checking-in at OAJ, Virg had taken a selfie and caught a picture of the luggage in it.  We shared that with the AA agents to assist with their pursuit of our bags.  If you have ever been at a luggage carousel at an airport, there are many black pieces of luggage which look alike.  When we purchased our luggage, we intentionally chose any color but black.  No matter the color of your luggage, we recommend placing something unique to identify yours quickly in a group – colored strap around the luggage, scarf or ribbon on handle – anything that would not catch in the conveyor and would help you quickly identify your luggage.

We walked from terminal A to C where our flight was departing from.  (There is not a B Terminal currently at EZE however it is being built along with a new control tower.)  While we were making friends with AA Agents, our travel companions were planning a counter offensive.  Our daughters searched for equipment rental in Ushuaia where we could obtain cold weather gear.  Everyone made an inventory of medication which we may need due to some being in our luggage.  It was beneficial to return to our group.  They shared in our anxiety, offering solutions and comfort.  No matter what type of journey we are on – career, travel, emotional, we are not along.  All we must do is look around for our support system, they are there and will have navigate the way.

The gate area was very small with minimal amenities.  This flight was chartered by Atlas Cruise Voyages for all of us as part of the cruise trip.  The flight holds a bit less than 200 – everyone on this flight minus the flight crew would be on our travel companions for the next 9 days.  We boarded a bus at the gate which took us to the airplane.  As we were getting on the plane, Jerry received a phone call from AA – our luggage is on the plane!  We did not lay eyes on them so we had to trust that what they were saying was true.  It did quickly relieve the stress and gave us hope.

Jerry and I were fortunate again to have an empty seat which allowed Virg to have a window seat for viewing and Jerry to have an aisle seat for easy restroom access.  Lunch was served – sliced apple, mini croissant with ham and cheese, muffin, peanuts and yogurt with granola.  (Yogurt again – Virg loves yogurt however Jerry is not a fan.)  The yogurt was packaged in a glass jar with rubber lid; brand was Familia Beaudroit.  Wonderful packaging: I am curious of the recycling of the jars.

The flight went well until the descent to the Ushuaia Airport.  The airport is on a peninsula of Ushuaia; there are high Andes Mountains to the West and smaller mountains to the east.  This creates crosswinds.  Winds were reaching up to 40 knots, creating turbulence leading up to the descent and making touch down a bit shaky.  The Captain controlled the plane well and received a round of applause from all when we touched down.

Now, we only wanted to lay eyes on our luggage.  While still on the plane, Jerry could see luggage being unloaded through a window – no sight of ours.  We waited with everyone watching the luggage carousel bring everyone’s luggage.  Each member of our small group received their luggage.  There were several pieces unloaded which looked similar to ours but we still waited.  Patiently waiting and finally, first came Virginia’s suitcase then Jerry’s.  Cheers amongst our group!

From the baggage area, we proceeded to place our luggage with the rest of the passengers.  The luggage would be sent to the ship in a separate box truck.  All of us boarded tour buses where we completed health forms.  We were then taken on a tour of Ushuaia enroute to the ship.  From our view, we could see the Andes Mountains with glaciers in a few of the peaks.  These glaciers provide fresh water to the town.  We also went by military housing for the Army.  This area is so isolated that protection was needed and the Army fulfilled that need.

There were several other cruise ships in port – National Geographic and Quark cruise lines were present.  The windy conditions necessitated us to take off any caps or anything that may fly off of our body while we boarded the ship.  We were escorted to one of the lounges where we completed health screening and received a welcome aboard cocktail.  Members of the ship crew escorted us to our cabins to begin our cruise.

The evening held a welcome from the Captain, Cruise Director, Hotel Manager and introduction to the Expedition Team.  The Team includes naturalists who specialize in kayaking, ornithologist (bird specialist), photographer and guides.  They represent a variety of countries including France, Peru, and Canada.

We enjoyed a buffet dinner this first night.  The rest of the dinners will be a la carte with breakfast and lunch being buffet.  The ship’s piano player, Chase, provided musical selections after dinner in the Dome, a lounge which has a clear glass ceiling to enjoy the views from the comfort of the interior.

The water was starting to get a bit rough so many of us chose a motion sickness remedy of choice – Dramamine, patch, motion bracelets and such.

Day 2 - Where have we landed? What day and time is it? (February 26, 2023)

 Sunday, February 26, 2023

We received a “breakfast” prior to landing.  It consisted of a fig bar, yogurt, and granola.  Disappointing for those who do not care for one of those items, i.e., Jerry.

Then celebrate- we landed at EZE – Buenos Aires, Argentina!  The country’s current campaign is “Smile”.  We were smiling because it only 15 minutes to get through immigration compared with the 40 minutes, 1 ½ hours that it took for our travel companions.

We immediately went to the AA Baggage Claim to start working through the process of arranging for our luggage to arrive prior to  our flight to Ushuaia the next day.  This line took longer than immigration.

Brenda, the AA Customer Service agent, was super – nice, knowledgeable.  When we related our story, she said, “Okay, let’s think through the best plan to correct the situation.”  There was another AA flight coming to EZE the next day – same flight that we arrived on.  She assured us that our bags would be on that flight, we could get them in time for our flight to Ushuaia.  We asked if the bags could be brought in on a flight from Miami which would arrive earlier; it would require the bags to go from JFK to MIA then to EZE.  She said that our only option would be the direct flight and no worries – this happens every day.  They work with the Cruises lines to transfer the luggage when delayed.  What she had not considered was that Ushuaia was our only option; the ship does not port anywhere else.  We left the airport feeling confident that our luggage would arrive in time for our flight.

Jenna had arrived at EZE and was waiting for us on the other side of security.  We were now all together and could head into the City.  Being short a few pieces of luggage, we were able to find a taxi which could hold the 4 of us and the girls’ luggage.  The taxi driver did not speak English, our Spanish is limited but we still managed to arrive with no issues.  My first impression of the area is that the country does a good job of keeping the spaces clean and with limited trash.  There are a lot of green spaces.  Being a Sunday, we saw many families enjoying the sunshine and relaxing.

Our hotel, Sheraton by Marriott was downtown, across from the train station.  There are many beautiful older stone buildings in BA.  I would enjoy the opportunity to return to BA and enjoy a city tour which would include a history of the area.

Jenna and Melanie stayed at the hotel and explored the area including visits to a bookstore and coffee shop.  We were traveling to the local cruise port to visit with Marlene, a Travel Advisor within the March Travel Group who is on a 180 Day World Cruise on the Oceania Insignia.  Coincidental that her ship would be docked in BA the same day that we would be there.  We walked to the cruise terminal because it was less than a mile from our hotel.  The weather was gorgeous, so the walk was appreciated and enjoyed.

Marlene had worked with ship’s security to arrange for our visit.  Security at the port found our names on the list with no issues.  We were having issues finding where to enter the dock area to board a bus to the ship.  There was extra confusion because an MSC and NCL ships were embarking at the same time.  After speaking with several cruise staff, we found the proper place to ride the bus to the ship.  Next, we had to clear ship’s security along with medical clearance to board the ship.  This took some time, but we finally were able to board the ship and enjoy the afternoon with Marlene.

The ship is the same class of ship of a few of the Azamara ships, so it felt very familiar.  The décor was beautiful blues and silvers, soothing and calming colors.  We had lunch at the Seaside café and topped it off with ice cream.  We enjoyed spending time with Marlene and meeting some of her travel companions for this wonderful adventure that she is on.

On our trip to and from the cruise terminal, we walked by a park with a Torre Monumental Clock Tower commemorating independence.  The Estacion Retro (Train Station) was nearby with a beautiful dome and ceilings.  Along the train station, there was an outdoor market.  Items being sold ranged from used clothing, household goods, electronics to new items of the same.  It was apparent that this was a normal Sunday outing for many as they shopped and greeted one another.

We passed a Department of Security on the way to the port.  We also saw a plane celebrating the Argentinean Air Force.  We felt very safe while walking though did keep our bag close to our body as we were told that there is always the possibility of pick-pocketers in crowded areas.

After returning to the hotel, we finally had an opportunity to shower and rest before drinks and dinner with friends.  In addition to Jenna and Melanie going on this trip, we were joining Gen and Pete and their friends, Sheridan, and Gary.  Jerry and I went to school with Gen, and she has been a client of March Travel Group for some time.  She was the one that reached out to us about this trip.  It was a rare opportunity to travel to the “7th Continent”.  We questioned whether to go or not because we are also scheduled to travel for a few weeks in April.  After mentioning the opportunity to friends, their response was “Why even think about it – just go!”  We said ‘Yes!” then asked about our daughters traveling, too.  Fortunately, there was space for them.  And we all started planning for this amazing trip.

Our evening started with drinks at Florerio Atlantico.  It is on the list of one of the top 50 Bars in the World.  Hard to tell if it deserved that ranking or not.  Melanie had a few mixed drinks while the rest of us enjoyed wine and engaging conversation.  From there, we went to an Italian restaurant, Piegari.  More wine, conversation, and fabulous food.  Both the bar and restaurant were within walking distance of our hotel.  It was a beautiful night for a walk.

Day 1 - Exploring Airports (February 25, 2023)

OAJ (Jacksonville, NC), to CLT (Charlotte, NC), to JFK International Airport, (NY, NY) to the Sky

When we travel, I usually keep a handwritten travel journal.  This began when we received a sweet journal on one of our cruises.  This journal has been beneficial when travelling to repeat places, whether it be ourselves or others.  We can refer to the journals to remind us of the name of restaurants, travel companions and places visited.  Perhaps, we want to recommend that restaurant or travel guide and can accurately relay the information when we cannot remember specific details.  With unique trips coming up in our future, we decided to expand those journals to digital ones and share with you!  You can now review our journal for recommendations, or you can live vicariously through us as we “March Around the Globe”.

Our trip began from our local regional airport, Albert J Ellis Airport, Onslow County, North Carolina -OAJ.  We appreciate the proximity of OAJ to our home along with the simplicity of flying from a regional.  There are drawbacks.  One drawback is that there are only two airlines which fly from OAJ – American Airlines and Delta Airlines.  This means that we either fly through Charlotte-Douglas International Airport (CLT) or Atlanta-Hartford International Airport (ATL).  When moving to Jacksonville, NC, in 2016, we knew that it would be best to choose one airline in order to maximize loyalty points, frequent flyer miles and the such.  We chose American Airlines and for the most part have been extremely happy.

The flight was leaving OAJ at 6:45am.  Our wake-up time was 4am to leave the house by 5am.  We would check in at least one hour in advance of the flight and allowing time to go through Security.  TSA takes their job very seriously even though it is a regional airport.  Both of us have experienced full pat-downs and our carry-on being reviewed during various trips.

During check-in, we requested to be placed on stand-by for an earlier flight from CLT to JFK.  The current flight would have us landing at JFK at 6:30pm with 8:45pm departure from JFK to EZE (Buenos Aires, Argentina).  Plus, we would be spending 10 hours at CLT.  We preferred to break up the layover time between the 2 airports.  The ticket agent placed on stand-by for the 2pm flight to JFK and even let us know which gate it was scheduled departure.  Now we could head to TSA to process for the OAJ to CLT flight.

This morning, we were excited to see that TSA had recently installed new state of the art scanners for carry-ons.  There were two and look akin to an MRI scanner.  No issues getting through security plus we were able marvel at this new technology.

Our flight boarded on time however there was a delay in taking off due to the weather.  This did not stress us because of the 10-hour layover.  Even if we were to make the earlier flight, there was still plenty of time between the flights.  The captain was accurate, and we left 30 minutes after planned.  There was turbulence due to the weather however the flight crew handled it well, landing the plane safely at CLT.  Other passengers were scrambling to make connections though for once we could leisurely locate the Admiral’s Club Lounge for American Airlines to relax for the morning.

Our ability to access the Lounge was due to our status with American Airlines.  Others can access this lounge and a few of the other lounges by purchasing day passes.  When you have a long layover, it is a wonderful benefit with complimentary beverages and snacks along with free Wi-Fi, lounge seating and some even have showers.

This morning, Avocado Toast was a specialty in the Lounge.  The Lounge was a nice base camp for us.  One of us would go for a walk within the Airport to stretch our legs and exercise while the other would stay with the carry-on items and work.  We were making the best use of Wi-Fi while it was accessible.

Close to the time that our stand-by flight was boarding, we proceeded to that gate with high hopes of making the earlier flight.  We had been watching our status in the American Airlines app.  We were numbers 1 and 2 on the Stand-By List.  It was like a lottery – hoping that your number would be called.  There was a list of current passengers waiting for upgrades.  We knew that if a passenger would be upgraded, their seat would open allowing us the possibility of getting on the flight.  Not only that, it was possible that the person be upgraded would be moved from a nice seat which also benefit us.

Watching the Stand-by list, one passenger who was lower on the list received a check – they were given a seat before us.  There were several American Airlines crews who were on stand-by.  It is important for crew to get their appropriate location to work.  Watching the app, it showed that Jerry was assigned a seat, but Virginia had not.  Then our names were called – Yes!  We both received seats on the earlier flight and they were Exit Row seats.  This meant more legroom.  We were not sitting next to each other, but we were on the plane!   Virg received a window seat which she loves – being able to watch the terrain change along with taking pictures.  We were so excited about getting on the flight that we did not think about our luggage.  That should not have been our concern – airlines staff should have that under control.  Or so we thought.

Our flighted land at JFK at 3pm.  There was turbulence again due to the weather though the flight crew handled it with ease.  Our afternoon was spent in one of the Admiral’s Club Lounges where we enjoyed the Wi-Fi, snacks, and lounge furniture.

Our daughter, Melanie, was flying from Columbus, Ohio, to JFK and would be on the same flight to Buenos Aires with us.  Her flight arrived without issue at 4:30pm.  Excited to be traveling with both of our daughters.  Jenna would be meeting us in BA.  Growing up, we were intentional with providing them with learning opportunities through travel.  Early vacations would be centered around trips to and with family in Florida, Hilton Head Island, then we slowly expanded into cruises with them.  Our first international flight out of the States and the Caribbean was a London/Paris trip in 2013 to celebrate their graduations from college and high school.  Let’s just say that they have wander lust like their parents and are always ready for an adventure.

The rest of our time spent at JFK was in the lounge and having dinner.  During this time, we realized that our luggage had not been on our early flight to JFK – it was still sitting in CLT.  We were not concerned because there was still our original flight coming to JFK.  Our luggage would be on that flight and still make the connection at JFK.  Ideally, that is what should have happened.  That is what would have happened if the flight from CLT to JFK was not delayed and would be arriving after our flight was scheduled to leave.  We brought this to the attention of American Airlines Customer Service who told us that there was nothing that they could do.  We would have to work with AA Customer Service in BA.

The flight from JFK to EZE was 9 hours which stretched to 10 due to turbulent weather.  Our seats were a bit more spacious than some Economy however not much.  There was an empty seat in our row which allowed additional space but not much.  It was difficult to sleep even though the flight left at 8:45pm which was close to our normal bedtime.  We each slept the best that we could under the circumstances.

For those who may use a CPAP, Jerry uses one and was able to plug it in while sleeping on the plane.  There were difficulties with the device staying plugged in.  Every time the passenger ahead of us moved, the CPAP would unplug.  The device was also very bulky.  Needless to say, Jerry will be looking into a portable unit before our next trip.
